Kannur Tourist Places

Kannur is a land of unspoiled beaches, full of greenery, and a lot of historic places with its peaceful and inviting aura. Some of the famous places in Kannur to visit are Payyambalam beach, St. Angelo Fort, Palakkayam thattu, Vismaya Water park, Muzhappilangad Drive-in beach, Aaralam wildlife sanctuary, Kavvayi islands, baby beach, Meenkunnu beach, Ezhara beach, Mapilla Bay, and Pallikunnu Mookambika temple. Nothing can beat the delicacy of northern Kerala, especially Kannur. The cuisine of Kannur is influenced by tradition across the globe, including Arabic, Persian and European. Kannur dishes made of Kadukka, Kallumakkaya or mussels, Thalassery biriyani, and mutton  are very famous. 

Payyambalam Beach

The Payyambalam Beach is an impeccably maintained destination in Kannur. Meenkunnu Beach

Meenkunnu Beach is located at the North Kerala village of Azhikode, 12 kilometers away from Kannur town. The place has a slow pace. It is an area of fishing hamlets. It is interesting to watch people doing different types of fishing and catching fish right at the beach.

Muzhappilangad Beach

Muzhappilangad Beach is famous for being Kerala's only drive-in beach. At about 7km from Thalassery in Kannur, you have a 4 km stretch of sand that awaits you to simply drive along as you soak in the view of the beautiful Malabar Coast. Along the way, one gets to munch on delicacies from a number of shacks that offer authentic Malabar cuisine. It is often considered a swimmers paradise as the black rocks protect the beach from deep currents.

Thottada Beach

Thottada is another pristine beach located near the Kannur Railway Station and is about 7 km from Kannur. This secluded beach has a small river at one end that connects to the sea. The beach is ideal for relaxing under the sun or for a swim

Vayalapra Floating Park

V-Pra Park is a water park which is beautifully constructed on top of Vayalapra Kaayal. V-Pra Park is one of the beautiful places in Kannur district to spend with your family and children. You drive through roads touching the river powered by solar lights on 2 sides and finally you will start walking on the path built on top of the river. It is packed with various activities like pedal boating, kayaking, group boating, party boat, kids water ride, gaming, food court with different types of foods.

Kannur Lighthouse

Towering at the height of 75 feet, the lighthouse in Kannur is the first lighthouse to be constructed in Kerala. First built in 1903, the place has a history as well as cultural significance. The vantage point offers spectacular and awe-inspiring views of the entire district of Kannur, the vast expanse of the Arabian sea, and the Baby beach.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary was constituted in the year 1984 and extended to an area of 55 Sq.Km. The Protected Area comes under the jurisdiction of Aralam Wildlife Division, which is a part of Wildlife Circle (Northern Region) Palakkad and shares boundaries with the ecologically significant Kottiyoor Wildlife Sanctuary, another protected area which comes under the same division.

Peralassery

​Ever heard of the snake temple, Peralassery, also known for its unique stepwell and for being open to people of all faiths? This holds true in the case of Sri Subramanya Temple, situated 14 km away from Kannur in Kerala. Kannur itself is home to many temples but the one dedicated to Lord Subramanya in Peralassery is unique for its architecture and associated legends

Mappila Bay Harbour

The Mappila Bay serves more like a fishing harbour than an exciting tourist destination. There are boating facilities that will take you around the harbour. However, it is advisable to stay only in the inland waters and avoid the coastal waters, that can turn unfavourable as the weather changes.

Dharmadam Beach

​Located about 100 m away from the pristine shores of Dharmadom Beach, Dharmadom Island has turned into favourite for tourists seeking a secluded and tranquil picnic spot. This uninhabited island is covered with a canopy of coconut palms and dense bushes, surrounded by mainland rivers on three sides and the sea on the other. One can approach it only at low tide, and strolls around the place give one a brilliant view of the confluence of the Anjarakandy and Thalassery Rivers.

Palakkayam Thattu

Palakkayam Thattu is one of the alluring places to visit in Kannur near the Western Ghats because of the verdant greenery and dizzying height of about 3350 feet above the sea level. It also happens to be one of the most visited hill stations in the state of Kerala. Populated by dense forests and several hillocks, the quaint hamlet is a favoured destination for avid trekkers.

Paithalmala

Pythalmala, also called Vaithalmala, is a hill station situated in the Kannur region of Kerala. Snuggled in the Western Ghats, the trek takes you through dense forests and opens up to a wide expanse that goes to the Pythalmala peak.

Parassinikkadavu Snake Park

​Regarded as one of the finest snake sanctuaries of Asia, the Parassinikadavu Snake Park is the pride of the south. It is one of the most prominent reptile preservation centres in the country and is the only one in Kerala. The Parassinikadavu Snake Park is home to over 150 different species of reptiles like crocodiles, monitor lizards and snakes- both venomous and non-venomous. Not only reptiles and amphibians, but this snake park also goes a long way to preserve and protect many wild mammals, marine creatures as well as rare avifauna- both endemic and migratory.

Madayipara

An hour’s drive from Kannur lies a hidden hillock that boasts of some of the rarest floral species in God’s Own Country. Welcome to Madayipara, home to over 500 plant species, 300 flowering plants and rare breeds of butterflies. Drive down here and the locals will inform you of the seasonal beauties at this laterite hill. Many are used during major festivals in decorative styles across the State. The bio-diversity of the place has slowly helped it gain traction among tourists and nature lovers alike.

Parassinikkadavu

About 16 km away from Kannur, Parassinikkadavu is a town popular for its Muthappan Temple and Parassinikkadavu Snake Park. The Muthappan temple, dedicated to Sree Muthappan is the only Hindu temple in the state which witnesses a Theyyam performance daily as per ritual.

St-Angelo Fort

​Triangular in shape, the St. Angelo Fort is also known as the Kannur Fort. This was built by the Portuguese Viceroy Don Francesco de Almada. Built in 1505, the Fort was captured by the Dutch in 1663 and later sold to the Ali Raja of the Arakkal dynasty. The Fort was taken over by the British in 1790 and turned it into its main army centre in the Malabar region. Now, it is under the Central Archaeology Department. From the Fort, we can see the Moppilla Bay, and hundred meters from the seashore, the picturesque Dharmadom Island in the Arabian Sea, a sight worth watching.

Al Ameen Park

​Like many other cities, Kerala is well-known for its exotic green zones. Al Ameen Park, Kavvayi, Kalikkadappuram, Payyanur provides the residents a possibility to take a break for a while and have fun. Feel free to read a book, smell flowers, meditate, walk with your pets, have a picnic, admire the greenery or sunbathe in your free time.

Arakkal Museum

Kannur’s rich and vibrant landscape is host to the great Arakkal Kettu Museum, former residence of the only Muslim Royal Family in Kerala, the Arakkal Ali Rajas. Step inside this beautiful architectural marvel and be transported to a different era, with heirlooms and artefacts of their rein adorning the entire building. The museum exhibits artefacts and heirlooms of the royal family which includes the family seal, the pathayam (the wooden box in which grain was stored), document box and so on. The royal copies of the Holy Quran, an old-fashioned telephone, swords and daggers used by the rulers, and a telescope are also on display.

Choottad Green Park

Dharmadam Beach Park

Located on Dharmadam Island on the edge of the rustic but vibrant city of Kannur, the Dharmadam Beach is a stunning golden shore and an absolute heaven for those who want to treat themselves after a weary week. The Dharmadam Island is an attraction of its own, and its peculiarity is that during low tide, you can literally walk up to this island by wading through water that is barely even knee deep. This island has been named by Buddhist monks who frequently visited the place not only for its spectacular natural beauty and alluring aura of peace but also because the entire island is dotted with rare medicinal herbs. Dharmadam means 'place of ethics' which is another for this magical island, and the Dharmadam Beach is a testimony to the stellar reputation that this island holds.
